Lieferando quits hundreds of drivers: the waiver of permanent employment!
Wien, Österreich - Lieferando, the leading meal delivery service in Austria, faces a profound change. After months of negotiations on a collective agreement (KV) for bicycle messengers, which affects a total of 5,000 drivers, the company is now terminating the employment of hundreds of drivers and switching to free service contracts. Between 600 and 966 employees will be affected by this changeover, as both the Standard as well as the APA. The company plans to revise its logistical processes by the end of June and is expected to complete the complete change by the end of July.
In the future, drivers will have to provide their equipment themselves, for example through their own bicycles or electric mopeds. Only the service clothing, consisting of a jacket, helmet and bag, is provided by the company. Lieferando spokeswoman Katrin Wala emphasized that this decision results from a comprehensive evaluation and is in accordance with the industry standard, as well as the termination. Of the approximately 850 active drivers, estimated 600 will be released, while the temporary contracts are expired for 250, so OE24
the reactions and the future prospects
The reactions to this change are split. The traffic spokesman for the Greens, Lukas Hammer, sees a step backwards for workers' rights and sharply criticized the changeover to the “Free People” model. This step would be rated as a "poverty certificate" because it combines disadvantages of independence and platform dependency. The forecast of the unions is particularly worrying, which fear an increase in false self -employed and free employees, which endangers the securing of the employees.
Lieferando itself tries to smooth the waves by reaffirming to continue to invest in the Austrian market, but emphasizes that this cannot be done as part of the collective agreement. The decision to break away from the structure was considered necessary to remain competitive after other competitors had not taken this path. It remains to be seen whether this leads to a stable labor market in the long term.
