Integration from Ukraine: Focus on labor market access and language barriers

Steiermark, Österreich - The labor market situation for refugees Ukrainians in Austria shows significant challenges. By mid-2023, over 300,000 Ukrainians started integration and language courses in Germany, as the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees reported. There are positive developments in Austria: 11.2 percent of Ukrainian refugees now have very good knowledge of German, which also has a positive effect on their life satisfaction.

Another aspect is the legal situation. Ukrainians, who have been enjoying protection in Austria since March 2022, have extensive rights by March 2026, including access to the living and labor market as well as social services. For many, as it was found in Tyrol, integration is positive, and more than 70 percent rate the coexistence as successful.
