regional differences and industry developments

The greatest increase in job seekers was recorded in Upper Austria, where the number rose by 10.8 percent. The increase in youth unemployment is particularly alarming, which recorded an increase of 9.9 percent with 67,658 people affected. Noe.orf reports that unemployment in Lower Austria at the end of February 2025 was 62,656 people, which corresponds to an increase of 3.6 percent in the year. Here, too, the trade and construction are particularly affected.

Despite the increasing unemployment figures, the labor market offers numerous vacancies. In parts of the construction and service sector there is a wide range of 13,468 vacancies. Labor and Economic Minister Martin Kocher (ÖVP) underlined that the government has implemented targeted training measures in order to reduce the number of unemployed. Nevertheless, numerous challenges are imminent, because the economy is still in a recession, and the increase in industry and trade also affect the labor market situation negatively, as AMS board member Johannes Kopf made it clear in his assessments. The pressure on politics is growing to take faster measures to stabilize the labor market.
