New regulation: Unemployed will not earn anything about it in the future!

On April 9, 2025, Minister of Economics Wolfgang Hattmannsdorfer (ÖVP) announced new regulations for minor work in Austria at a press conference. The central change concerns the employment situation of unemployed: in the future, in many cases, these may no longer be able to take on minor jobs. Hattmannsdorfer criticized the existing regulation as "anti -performance" and explained that the main goal was to attribute unemployed to the labor market faster. The Minister of Social Affairs, Korinna Schumann (SPÖ), supports this initiative and emphasizes the current stability of the labor market, despite the ongoing recession.

However,

The new provisions provide exceptions: Long -term unemployed, older workers over a period of six months after loss of their employment as well as people who were marginally employed before their unemployment, can continue to earn. These innovations are part of a more comprehensive plan that also includes measures to promote qualification offers, especially in the nursing industry. Finally, demographic development requires additional workers in this area.

The stability of the labor market

Although the economic situation in Austria is tense and almost 400,000 people are unemployed, the labor market is described as astonishingly stable. Schumann emphasizes that despite these challenges, more measures have to be taken to reintegrate low -qualified, older employees and people with health restrictions into the labor market. According to a report by the WIFO, measures of active labor market policy show that moderate reduction in aggregated unemployment is actually possible.

Hattmannsdorfer also pointed out the need for qualified immigration and demanded faster recognition of foreign degrees. The existing funding programs, such as the care scholarship that aims to award 12,000 scholarships, are to be continued to support the industry and achieve better qualification. Environmental foundations for training in environmental -related professions as well as grants for women in the areas of technology and craft remain.

measures for the future

An important element of the new regulation is the future freezing of the minor limit at the level of 2025, which is 551 euros. The unemployed can currently earn up to 1,800 euros net per month, which is seen as an obstacle to return to the regular labor market. Education Minister Christoph Return (NEOS) emphasizes the need for higher qualification, since in particular the unemployment rate in people with only one compulsory school leaving certificate is over 21 percent.

Overall, the new regulation aims not only to improve the employment situation, but also to increase the qualifications of the workers in order to be able to better counter the challenges of the future.
