Coalition crisis in Styria: FPÖ and ÖVP in conversation!
After the election defeat of the Volks Party (ÖVP) in Styria, it is bubbling within the party. Chancellor Karl Nehammer is criticized because some officials demand that the ÖVP should rethink its strategy. As the krone reported, two regional officials in a servusv show point out that a change of course is necessary to strengthen the back in the economy again. Josef Herk, the President of the Styria Chamber of Commerce, compared the situation to a soccer team and emphasized that "taking measures" if the "coach" was unsuccessful.
The new triple coalition, consisting of ÖVP, SPÖ and NEOS, is critically assessed by the officials, since some are not enthusiastic about this conversion either in the ÖVP camp. As Orf Styria reported, Herk sees the possibility of an alliance with the FPÖ to work on the budget questions and the output control. However, the Styrian social partners express concern about negative effects on employees. ÖGB President Horst Schachner fears cuts in the pensions, given past experiences with black and blue governments.
HERK demands to put the ideologies of the parties aside and to look for pragmatic solutions that aim to reduce expenditure without raising new taxes. The negotiations between the FPÖ and ÖVP are crucial in order to achieve a positive turn in the political situation. However, Schachner warns for caution and requires a more precise assessment of the effects on the employees as soon as a government program is present.
