Insolvency drama: Kika/Leiner before Christmas - 1,400 jobs in danger!

In a devastating turn, around 1,400 employees of the Kika/Leiner furniture store chain had to cope with the news about the final bankruptcy of their employer. This happened just a few weeks before Christmas, which makes the situation even more dramatic. The renovation attempts have failed, and the company has now registered bankruptcy, which brings the jobs of many employees in a serious danger. However, the search for a possible investor remains, even if the chances of success are assessed as extremely low. Meanwhile, the company begins with the sale of the rest of the inventory, while the employees urgently have to find new jobs, as

effects on customers and down payments

The bankruptcy affected not only the employees, but also numerous customers. Many have already made down payments for ordered furniture, but the uncertainty about the delivery of the goods is great. Maximilian Eder from the Association for Consumer Information (VKI) explains that the insolvency administrator would like to present a plan by the end of the week how these down payments will be done. Ideally, he could enter the contracts and offer customers the full performance, but the likelihood of this is low. Instead, customers could only register bankruptcy claims in many cases, which means that they most likely suffer a total loss of their payments. Customers are now asked to report until January 10th to register their claims on the condition of paying a fee of 25 euros.

The situation for customers who needed replacement furniture due to flood damage in Lower Austria and now have to worry about their deposits is particularly painful. In such cases, only attorney costs and legal steps could help to regain claims. In order to avoid such turbulence in the future, customers should be aware that deposits contain a high risk. It is advisable to consider possible coverage such as downsizing guarantees or special trust accounts when placing the order, as shown by plup.de . In an emergency, these measures could offer protection if the dealer is unable to deliver the ordered goods.
