HIV and job: What employees need to know! Clarity for those affected!

Around 40 million people live with the Hi virus worldwide, and the numbers are also alarming in Austria. According to the Austrian AIDS company, between 8,000 and 9,000 people are infected, but despite the medical advances that HIV have made a well-treated chronic illness, stigmatization and discrimination are still the order of the day. Current figures show that social acceptance remains behind medical advances. A survey by German AIDShilfe shows that 90% of the respondents in Germany live well with their HIV infection, but 95% have had a discriminatory experience in the past 12 months, as reported.

A central topic related to HIV concerns the rights of employees. Labor law expert Martina Lackner from the Austrian Trade Union Confederation has clarified that employers have no obligation to be informed about the HIV status of their employees. On the contrary, a termination due to an HIV infection would be discriminatory. The results of a current study clarify that the effects of stigmatization often weigh more heavily than the health consequences of the infection. This is also confirmed by the knowledge from the study "Positive Voices 2.0", which shows that experiences of discrimination in the healthcare system are particularly common and significantly impair the quality of life of those affected.

discrimination despite medical progress

Another alarming result is that a quarter of those surveyed in the study hide their HIV status out of fear of prejudice. This stigmatization contradicts the medical facts, because effective therapy is not transferable. Nevertheless, 70% of the participants have difficulty revealing their illness. Experts call for increased clarification of the population about HIV and its treatment to reduce the stigma and promote respectful coexistence, as krone.at .
