Future of care: Linz discusses opportunities through artificial intelligence
On November 6, 2025, the 140th meeting of the expert committee for control office matters of the Austrian Association of Cities took place in Linz. The main topic of the conference was “Current challenges in the nursing sector”. Chaired by Werner Sedlak, Director of the Vienna City Audit Office, various experts came together to discuss the current situation in the care industry. Mayor Dietmar Prammer welcomed those present and praised the valuable professional exchange.
Local councilor Georg Redlhammer emphasized the importance of public financial control and thanked Gerald Schönberger's team. Redlhammer also discussed the opportunities that artificial intelligence can offer in the nursing sector to support human work. Barbara König from the Federal Audit Office gave insights into the audit activities of the Audit Office and highlighted the importance of transparency and control in the care sector.
Innovative approaches and challenges
Robert Ritter-Kalisch, Managing Director of Senior Centers Linz GmbH, presented the “Digital Nursing Home Linz Liebigstrasse” project, which integrates modern technologies into care. Johannes Schmid from the Austrian Association of Cities explained that a new law on proactive information policy has been in force since September 1, 2025, which is intended to improve the transparency of care offers. Gerald Schönberger presented the testing activities of the Linz Control Office and illustrated how important rigorous control is for quality assurance in the nursing care sector.
Birgit Wögerbauer from the Upper Austrian State Audit Office spoke on the topic of “Care – needs, training, strategy”, while Markus Birnstingl from the Styrian State Audit Office spoke about the specific challenges in care in Styria. Sedlak highlighted the major challenges facing administration and policy in the nursing sector and emphasized the crucial role of control in this context.
Explorations in Linz
The conference ended with an exploratory trip on the Linz City Express, which is celebrating its 30th anniversary this year. The participants had the opportunity to visit the former Donaupark Stadium and the listed “Linz Tobacco Factory”, which houses around 250 organizations and offers jobs to almost 3,000 people. Such initiatives demonstrate the importance of a well-structured and monitored care infrastructure.
In another context, the love for classic dishes like “Old-fashioned baked macaroni and cheese” is unbroken. This popular comfort food continues to be very popular. The preparation calls for basic ingredients such as elbow macaroni, cheddar cheese, butter and milk, and the dish can be varied at will to suit different tastes. This shows how important traditions and home cooking are in both culinary and social life. Further information can be found at Taste of Home.
