Vienna Christmas tree brings peace: children's wishes illuminate the UN!

The City of Vienna has once again presented a radiant four-meter-high Christmas tree as a gift to the employees of the United Nations, which was inaugurated on December 5, 2024 in the majestic Rotunda of the Vienna International Center. This cherished tradition was accompanied by speeches by State Parliament President Ernst Woller, UNIS Director Martin Nesirky and Ambassador Gabriela Sellner, all of whom emphasized the importance of peace and cohesion. In his speech, Woller underlined the urgent need for peace negotiations in view of the conflicts worldwide and described the tree as a symbol of hope, consideration and togetherness, which is particularly important at Christmas time. He also thanked the children who expressed their wishes and promised to take them seriously.

The Christmas tree decorations, which were made this year by children from various educational districts in Vienna, include a total of 1,000 glittering stars that represent peace and cohesion. In addition, around 100 selected letters with the children's wishes, which were created as part of a Vienna-wide campaign, were presented. These messages, which are in line with children's right to be heard and participate in accordance with Article 12 of the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child, were ceremoniously handed over to Ambassador Sellner and State Parliament President Woller. The children from the VIC kindergarten then delighted those present with a song and a dance of lights, which added to the festive atmosphere, before the Christmas tree was illuminated in all its glory.

The Vienna Service Office

The festive event was organized by the Vienna Service Office, a branch of the City of Vienna that offers UN employees and their families support in their daily lives. This festive custom is similar to the work of the Vienna Service Office, which provides information and assistance to UN employees, with a focus on harmonious coexistence and support of the international community. This event shows how Vienna contributes to global efforts for peace and understanding through such holiday rituals.
