Mourning for parish vicar Jude Uzukwu: A heart for people and education
On Tuesday, December 10, popular parochial vicar Jude Uzukwu passed away at the age of 53 after a short illness. He has been active in pastoral care for the communities of Frättingsdorf, Hörersdorf and Siebenhirten since 2014, where he was valued for his cheerful and helpful nature. Originally born in Nigeria, he had the desire to become a priest from an early age, supported by his mother. After his ordination to the priesthood in 1999, he worked in his homeland for some time before coming to Austria in 2007 to continue his life here. During his time in Vienna, he completed two master's degrees and took on various pastoral tasks. Among other things, he was involved in the Apostle Church in Vienna and laid the foundation for his future work in rural areas.
Commitment and legacy
Josef Uzukwu always made sure to maintain contact with his homeland by supporting numerous young people with their schooling. In order to provide lasting help, he founded a school for 200 children and street children in his home diocese of Okigwe. This great effort, for which he received financial support from his communities in Austria, demonstrates his tireless commitment to education and social justice. He was also president of the OPREU organization and a member of NIPRA, where he strengthened ties to his Nigerian roots and organized cultural celebrations that captured African drum sounds, such as NOEN reported.
His life's work was honored not only in the closest circle of believers, but also by numerous priests who took part in his silver jubilee celebration in September. Mayor Erich Stubenvoll praised him as an incredible asset to the community, who always kept the connection to Nigeria in his heart. When Father Jude Uzukwu died on December 10, he left behind a deep sadness and a luminous legacy that reaches far beyond the boundaries of his parish.
His interactions with young people and his unconventional approach to pastoral care have given hope and support to many in the region, confirming his lasting impact in people's hearts.
