Grief in St. Pölten: Caritas loses her pioneer Werner Scholz

St. Pölten, Österreich - The Caritas of the Diocese of St. Pölten mourns the loss of her former director Werner Scholz, who died on December 4, 2024 at the age of 92 at the St. Elisabeth Nursing Home in St. Pölten. From 1965 to 1996 Scholz was the first layperson to hold this significant position and shaped the organization over three decades. During this time, he was instrumental in building house nursing and the care of people with disabilities and mental illnesses. He also initiated important foreign aid projects in countries such as Albania and Senegal, as the Caritas emphasized in their message.

Its influence was particularly noticeable during two significant social changes in the 1970s: the diocesus synod 1972 and the Lower Austrian Social Welfare Act 1974. These events enabled him to actively help shape the social tasks of society and create a stable foundation for the Caritas of the Diocese of St. Pölten. Hannes Ziselsberger, the current Caritas director, praised his work and emphasized the continued relevance of Scholz 'decisions. "Werner Scholz was a charismatic pioneer whose commitment flows into the current work of Caritas," praises Michael Landau, President of Caritas Europe, the important contributions of the deceased.
