One of the other highlights of the evening in Madrid was the award of Biles ’girlfriend and rival Rebeca Andrade with the comeback of the year. The Brazilian played with the idea of ending her career after her third cruciate ligament injury in four years. Nevertheless, she fought back and competed in Paris at her third Olympic Games- where she won a gold, two silver and bronze medal- and thus became the highest-decorated Brazilian Olympic. Their gold moment led to one of the most iconic photos of the Olympic Games, on which Simone Biles and Jordan Chiles were in front of Andrade Rede.
"Individual sports can be insulating, but Paris has shown that camaraderie can exist between competitors. I was so proud to compete in addition to last year's award winner of this prize, Simone Biles," said Andrade after her victory.
"Simone and I are the only two gymnasts who have won a Laureus Award, and I hope that our stories can inspire anyone who has experienced injuries and setbacks to continue to fight against the many obstacles on the long way to recover."
The development of sport
Although Real Madrid won the team of the year Award, it was the teenager Lamine Yamal from the rival Barcelona, who received the breakthrough of the year. At the age of only 16 he became the Player and goal scorer in the history of the European Championship and celebrated his birthday by playing in the European Championship final the day after his 17th birthday.
The Laureus Awards, however, serve not only to honor the greatest athletes, but also to the recognition of those who use sport to make positive changes in society. This year's Sport for Good Award went to Kick4Life , a organization founded in 2005 to reach endangered young people in Lesotho.
