Politicians are increasing: a sign of solidarity in times of crisis!

In a significant step in Lower Austria, the state parliamentarians decided to increase their pays by 4.6 percent from July 2025 and the mayors from the beginning of 2025 by 3.5 percent. This was decided in the upcoming session of the state parliament, as was reported by oe24.at . Governor Johanna Mikl-Leitner (ÖVP) defended these adjustments as a sign of economy and solidarity at a time when the population suffers from the consequences of the economic crisis and the devastating flood disaster.

The governor emphasized that it was important to her to grant the mayors and the mayor of an adequate inflation adjustment, "also with the support of the freedom". This decision is evaluated in recognition of the hard work of the local chiefs, who are often available seven days a week to support the citizens. In particular, the governor's deputy Udo Landbauer (FPÖ) spoke out for a zero-wage round for top politicians and described this as the "cleanest and most neat way". In his opinion, it is an honest sign of solidarity, especially in view of the rapidly increasing cost of living that many families burden, as well as from krone.at

The challenge for mayor

There are over 2000 mayors in Austria, but only 30 percent of whom do this as the main occupation. In many, this fact leads to incomprehension over the zero -wage round, since the tasks of a mayor are often comparable to those of a managing director in a medium -sized company. The responsibility that the mayors bear is enormous because they are not only for the employees of the town hall, but are also personally liable for their decisions and often have to take on a variety of إدارة tasks. This increases the importance of the ongoing discussion about the appropriate remuneration of political offices in economically difficult times.
