Emergency calls in Tyrol: Pocket calls remain a big problem!
The Tyrol control center recorded a notable decline in actual emergency calls in 2024. Managing director Bernd Noggler explained that there were still many calls due to COVID-19, especially in the first few months of the year; 2023 was marked by this pandemic. Fortunately, fewer avalanche accidents caused alarm in 2024. However, the total number of alerts remained almost constant compared to the previous year at around 530,000. This number includes not only real emergency calls, but also digital messages and other alerts. Despite a decline in “pocket calls,” it remains a significant problem because many of these calls are unnecessary, such as kleinezeitung.at reported.
The challenge of so-called “pocket calls,” where emergency calls are accidentally made from smartphones, continues. In 2024, around 40,000 such calls were recorded, which poses further difficulties for the emergency call line. Noggler emphasizes that it is impossible to fully explain or eliminate this phenomenon. In this context, State Security Councilor Astrid Mair praised the constant and highly professional work of the control center, which operates at the highest level “365 days a year”.
New leadership for the control center
On April 16, 2015, Bernd Noggler was appointed managing director of the Tyrol control center for five years. The 49-year-old Tyrolean is considered a proven expert in disaster control. Over the last six months, as interim managing director, he has successfully restored trust among employees and system partners. Security officer LHStv Josef Geisler congratulated Noggler and emphasized that he had gained valuable experience in his many years of work in civil defense and disaster control, which is now being used in the control center. The decision to put Noggler at the top came after a hearing with several applicants, in which he was able to convince the commission the most fire department.tirol informed.
