1. FC Union Berlin is starting the second half of the Bundesliga with a new coaching team. On Friday, Bo Svensson and his coaching team, consisting of Babak Keyhanfar, Kristoffer Wichmann and Tijan Njie, were released. Horst Heldt, the managing director of men's professional football, explained the decision after a detailed analysis of the season so far. He emphasized that a significant change is necessary to reverse the trend.

Bo Svensson becomes the new coach
The personnel realignment in the sporting leadership began with the presentation of Horst Heldt as the new sports director. Oliver Ruhnert will again act as chief scout at his own request. Urs Fischer, who led Union to the Bundesliga and Europe, was released in November 2023 after a run of 14 competitive games without a win. Nenad Bjelica then took over, but also had to leave after six months. Svensson was considered a preferred candidate for the coaching position and was already in discussion after Fischer's dismissal. He had previously taken a break and resigned from Mainz 05 after a poor start to the 2023/24 season. Svensson emphasized the importance of unity at Union for his future work.
