Mountain of garbage after Christmas: St. Pöltner waste team in full use!

In St. Pölten, the garbage workers worked with high pressure on December 28, 2024 to dispose of the waste incurred after the holidays. The "Rest waste team 3", consisting of Thomas, Dominik and Florian, had already covered several kilometers at sunrise and emptied numerous overcrowded garbage cans. Over 400 containers are to be emptied by the end of the day, whereby the garbage is then transported to the garbage dump. Every year, around 32,000 tons of household waste are generated in the city, ten percent of them in the Christmas season alone, which, according to Nicole Munz, head of waste management, leads to a noticeable increase in waste quantities. "Since the Black Friday we have seen a rapid increase in the amounts of waste that continues after the holidays," she reports.

Especially in large residential complexes, many tons are overwhelmed because mountains of boxes and packaging material often land in residual waste. "We already know what to expect," adds Dominik Hobl. Unfortunately, waste separation does not always work optimally; Even a deterioration of the separator was observed. Good teamwork is all the more important: vehicle driver Thomas Mann actively supports his colleagues in emptying the containers and dealing with the narrow streets with them, which are often blocked by parked cars. Florian Grill, who has been working on garbage disposal for five years, emphasizes that the amount of garbage is increasing steadily and the work becomes more intense. "We even find things that do not belong in residual waste, like a microwave," he notes.

After the intensive working day, the garbage transporters must be emptied. Around ten to twelve tons of waste fit into the vehicles, with a built -in press always compressed the garbage. The employees are physically challenged, but the team has prepared for it.

In the meantime, fresh new priests were ceremoniously adopted in the priest seminar Augsburg. At the Eucharistic celebration, Dominic Ehegrat encouraged the seminarians with the moving words of Pope Benedict XVI.: "Don't be afraid of Christ! He takes nothing and he gives everything." This illustrates the central role of faith and community in the seminar work. The event was rounded off by a joint festival, while the seminarians thanked the Dillingen Franciscans for their work they did, who switch to new workshops. Such moments strengthen the sense of community and the connection to the values of Christian life.
