Heroic deed in a chimney fire: Düdelsheim fire department saves lives!
In Düdelsheim, Hesse, a potentially devastating chimney fire was prevented thanks to the quick action of a neighbor and emergency responders. On November 23rd, when Wilfried and Annelie Molz lit a fire in the fireplace, their neighbor Jens Klitsch, who is active in both the professional and volunteer fire departments, noticed the rising flames and immediately alerted the fire department. Klitsch, who is responsible as deputy military commander, ensured that the alarm was raised quickly and thus prevented anything worse from happening. Within just ten minutes, six fire engines and a turntable ladder vehicle were in front of the Molz house, as chimney fires are generally treated as emergencies where there is a risk of an explosion the Kreis-Anzeiger reported.
The fire department did a great job extinguishing the fireplace fire using professional chimney sweeping tools and checking the chimney walls for overheating. A total of up to 35 firefighters were on duty, whose expertise impressively demonstrated how important their role is in the community. Wilfried Molz, a long-time listener of HR4, suggested the firefighters and Jens Klitsch for the “Hesse Heroes” campaign to recognize their heroic actions. He then received immediate feedback and a team visited the fire department and the Molz family. Klitsch, modest in his response, explained: "I don't feel like a hero. This is my job and I like doing it."
Recognition for communication research
In parallel with the local heroics, Dr. Jan Gerwinski from the University of Siegen was awarded the “Professional Communication” young talent award. The prize, which is endowed with 1,000 euros, honors his dissertation, in which he examined the communication of firefighters on duty under various conditions. Gerwinski researched what role digital media plays and how it can influence often critical situations. The work opens up new perspectives in a previously under-researched area of linguistics and offers valuable insights for the practice-oriented development of technical media for the fire service. This work was carried out as part of a BMBF research project and took place in a fire brigade training center universi.uni-siegen.de reported.
