Experience fasting in a new way: This is how we find inner freedom and joy of life!

Vienna, March 4, 2025 (KAP) - Lent, which begins on March 5th with Ash Wednesday, is viewed by Sr. Huberta Rohrmoser, an experienced meditation leader and Sister of Mary, as an invitation to inner freedom and to strengthening interpersonal relationships. In a conversation with Kathpress She explains that fasting is not just about doing without. “A fasting resolution that burdens the lives of other people does not make sense,” said the nun. Her focus is on recognizing and letting go of dependencies in order to promote joy in life. Her philosophy emphasizes the importance of mindfulness of yourself, other people, and God, rather than self-optimization or abstention due to pressure.

As part of her spiritual practice, Sr. Rohrmoser calls for a conscious use of media in order not to be overwhelmed by negative news. The goal is to acknowledge both the dark and positive aspects of the world. “We as humans should be aware of our feelings and give them space, but ultimately we also have to let them go in order to live in the present,” she explains. The understanding of fasting as a holistic practice also includes regional movements, mindful eating and regular moments of gratitude - elements that help to make life active and worth living. According to Sr. Huberta, fasting is about creating space for life and letting go of immediate needs in order to achieve psychological and spiritual freedom. As she describes, this attitude contributes to recognizing and fulfilling life's deep longings, not as a limitation but as a liberation.

The Sisters of Mary, to which Sr. Rohrmoser belongs, see their vocation as an act of service to people. “I can make people happy through my attentive listening and with small impulses for their lives,” she says, referring to her approach to spiritual guidance. She is convinced that God accompanies every person personally and sees her work as support in the development of individual paths in life. She sees the month of fasting as an important phase for self-reflection and cultivating relationships, both with God and with other people.
