Discover Vienna: Day of the District Museums on March 9, 2025!

On Sunday, March 9, 2025, it's that time again - that Day of the Vienna District Museums Visitors can expect an exciting program in the 23 district and six special museums between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. This year the focus is on the years 1945 to 1955, a time of reconstruction and social change in Vienna. City Councilor Veronica Kaup-Hasler emphasized the importance of these museums as places of remembrance and reflection that bring local heritage to life. Visitors can look forward to numerous exhibitions that offer a unique insight into the post-war period, including depictions of the city's reconstruction and cultural renewal.

A special highlight is the special exhibition “80 years – from the rubble to the flourishing district” in the Leopoldstadt District Museum, which sheds light on the development of Vienna's 2nd district. The individual districts focus on the post-war period with individual topics and report on destruction, deprivation and reconstruction from different perspectives. There are also numerous events in the museums, including readings, guided tours and special exhibitions that, among other things, address the role of the media and the experiences of contemporary witnesses.

Special exhibitions and interactive experiences

Another highlight is the exhibition “8 Bit plus reloaded” in the Donaustadt, which runs until October 5, 2025. Here, visitors can admire around 30 original consoles from different decades and take part in classic games such as “Gran Turismo” or “Pac Man” at interactive game stations. The artistic work of Robert Hum, entitled “Pictures for the Soul”, will also be presented.

With free entry and a stamp pass that is valid beyond the event weekend this year, the Day of the Vienna District Museums attracts all history-interested Viennese and visitors to Vienna to discover and experience the city's fascinating heritage up close.
