Dramatic death on the set of Emily in Paris” – filming continues!

On August 24, 2025, during the filming of the fifth season of the popular Netflix series “Emily in Paris” in Venice, a tragic incident occurred that had a significant impact on production. Assistant director Diego Borella, 47, suffered a heart attack on set at the Hotel Danieli and could not be saved despite immediate medical attention.

Borella collapsed during preparations for a scene and despite immediate first measures, including a defibrillator, all attempts at resuscitation failed. Rescue workers and carabinieri arrived at 6:42 p.m., but Borella was pronounced dead at 7:30 p.m. In a statement, Paramount Television Studios expressed its deep condolences to the family and loved ones of the deceased.

Production interruption and return to filming

After Borella's sudden death, filming was initially interrupted. The crew took a short break, but work on the set resumed on Saturday, August 25th. Lead actress Lily Collins and other actors were visible on set and continued filming. Among other things, scenes were filmed in a gondola on the Grand Canal.

Production work began in mid-August and is scheduled to be completed by the end of August. The new episodes of “Emily in Paris” have been announced for a start date of December 18, 2025.

The impact of the accident on the safety culture on set

The incident once again sheds light on safety practices on film sets. Safety advice like that of Holger Schumacher points out that safety on set is of great importance. The risks are diverse - time pressure and stress as well as inadequate communication between the trades are common sources of danger.

In Germany, where strict guidelines apply for the handling of dangerous objects, professional handling of safety issues is required. Stateliness and efficiency in terms of security measures are essential and, as emphasized in the entertainment industry, should not be neglected.

The unexpected loss of Diego Borella, who had many friends and acquaintances in his hometown of Venice, is a reminder that safety on set should be a top priority. His friends praised him as a charming and humorous person, and Simone Venturini, councilor for tourism, expressed his condolences and highlighted Borella's professionalism.

Returning to normality after such an incident requires not only an intensive examination of safety standards, but also the establishment of a comprehensive safety culture on film sets. Calling for independent safety professionals could help further raise awareness of safe working conditions.

Borella's death will undoubtedly remain in the minds of the film crew as they continue filming and honor his memory.
