The last Buchbinder Linz: Tradition meets modern!
The last Buchbinder Linz: Tradition meets modern!
In the traditional bookbindery of Strandl in Linz, the craft experiences its last trains in top form. The 42-year-old Clemens Strandl, a passionate bookbinder and one of the last of his guild, emphasizes: "It is the calm work with different materials, you could also say 'tinkering'. And in the end you are happy what you have achieved." At a time when machines dominate the book binding, Strandl attaches value to individual pieces and small series that are manufactured in his workshop. Books come back again and again that have to be properly restored or repaired - no case is hopeless, as the employee Viktoria Bartenberger explains.
tradition and challenges
The Beachl bookbindery, which has been active in Linz for 90 years, is faced with an increasingly difficult situation. Despite the challenges of the digital world, in which the demand for classic book binding work decreases, the craft remains alive. "Work is there and it is becoming increasingly difficult to get work. But the book itself will remain," says Clemens Strandl. Old books, often 70 to 100 years old or even from the 17th century, receive a new life in the workshop. The challenge is to preserve the old charm of the books and to repair them in such a way that future generations can use them.
In addition to the workshop, the BeachBinderei Strandl workshops offers that interested parties can learn the art of booking. The courses are limited and must be booked in advance. Participation is only possible if the minimum number of participants is reached. Wartelist places are available in the event of high demand, but some rules must be observed, as well as the current health regulations. These events offer participants the opportunity to gain practical experience and immerse themselves in the fascinating world of booking, while they are also experiencing the valuable knowledge of a traditional craft that is becoming increasingly rare today.
