WHO cleaning: Historical Agreement for Future Pandemia!
The members of the World Health Organization (WHO) agreed on April 16, 2025 for a historical agreement to prepare for future pandemics. The aim of this contract is to ensure a more effective and fairer reaction to health crises and to draw teaching from Corona pandemic (2020-2022). The contract text was approved after three years of intensive negotiations and controversial discussions in Geneva. The official farewell of the Agreement is to take place at the WHO annual meeting in May 2025, where the Member States will vote on how sueddeutsche.de
WHO General Director Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus described the agreement as a historical step and as evidence of functioning multilateralism. The contract is intended to help the member states to strengthen their health systems, to quickly discover and contain illness. In addition, the combating of antibiotic resistance is dealt with in an impressive manner, a concern that was particularly emphasized by European countries.
structure and content of the agreement
The agreement includes a 30-page text with dozens of measures that provide for the monitoring of pathogens, the promotion of relevant research and the establishment of local production facilities for tests and protective equipment. In the future, the participation and sharing of information about pathogenic between the countries and the WHO should also be a central element of international health architecture.
An important aspect of the contract is the so-called Pabs system, in which pharmaceutical companies are supposed to provide 10% of their production capacities as a donation for poorer countries. This also means that these companies voluntarily share their knowledge and know-how to produce medication and vaccines to ensure globally fair distribution of resources during pandemics. Doctors without borders praised the contract as a significant signal of global solidarity and emphasized that it contains positive elements for a fairer reaction to pandemics.
restrictions and concerns
However, there are also some restrictions: After the agreement comes into force, the WHO has no authority to arrange Lockdowns, travel restrictions or vaccinations. Decisions about such measures are reserved for the individual member states. Therefore, it remains to be seen whether the 60 ratifications required to put the agreement into force can be successfully completed within an acceptable time frame, which could possibly take several years. In the last negotiations that took 24 hours to prevent failure, populists expressed concerns about the power of the WHO in pandemic times.
Finally, the contract is a first step to reform and strengthen the global health structures, even if many details can still be clarified. The WHO boss emphasizes that the fates of the countries are connected and that a paradigm shift in global health policy is necessary to better manage future crises.
