Erwin Pröll has an accident when he falls on his bicycle in Grado – wishes for his recovery!

Erwin Pröll, the former governor of Lower Austria, was injured in a serious bicycle accident in Italy. The 78-year-old was on a family holiday in Grado when he fell on Friday morning. During the incident, Pröll sustained painful injuries to his pelvis and hip area. Initial care took place on site; He was then flown by helicopter to the Horn State Hospital in Lower Austria. According to his former press spokesman, Bernhard Heindl, Pröll is “doing well given the circumstances.”

Doctors at the state hospital are now examining further treatment steps. An operation is already planned for Saturday, while Pröll's condition is described as stable. However, no further information about the procedure or possible complications was revealed. Pröll is no stranger when it comes to bicycle accidents: During the “Legends Tour” of the Wachau Cycling Days in July 2018, he suffered a serious fall with a brain hemorrhage and bruises. A serious fall in August 2017 in Radlbrunn had already resulted in several broken bones.

Political wishes for recovery

The news of Erwin Pröll's accident also caused a stir in the political landscape. Johanna Mikl-Leitner, his successor as governor of Lower Austria, did not miss the opportunity to send his well-being wishes. In this context, it becomes clear how much Pröll is valued as a politician, even after he has left office.

Increase in bicycle accidents

The increasing accident rate among cyclists is an issue that not only affects Pröll. According to an analysis by the ÖAMTC, bicycle accidents have increased by 69 percent since 2013. What is particularly alarming is that 77 percent of these accidents are not related to the speed limit. Experts also emphasize that blanket speed reductions do not necessarily increase safety. Rather, better driving skills, monitoring and increased awareness are necessary to reduce the number of accidents.

In order to minimize the dangers of cycling, a comprehensive improvement of the cycling infrastructure is essential. In addition, current statistics show that over 60 percent of cyclists are considered the main cause of accidents. What is particularly noteworthy is that the cause of accidents “disregarding rules and prohibitions” has increased by 197 percent, while the influence of alcohol, drugs or medication has increased by 255 percent.

Given his sporting commitment, Erwin Pröll remains a supporter of cycling despite his accidents. Hopefully he recovers quickly from this latest setback.
