Bezos' New Glenn: rocket start in the race against SpaceX!
Jeff Bezos' company Blue Origin plans the first start of its powerful, reusable rocket New Glenn, which is scheduled for Monday at 1 a.m. (7 a.m. CET). However, the planned start was postponed due to bad weather conditions in the Atlantic, where the rocket is supposed to land on a ship. The test flight should bring the rocket into the ground or if a ignition level ended up on a floating platform in the Atlantic.
The development of the New Glenn lasted over a decade and was originally intended for a start five years ago. With a height of around 100 meters, the rocket is able to transport 45 tons of material into the low earth orbit. For comparison: SpaceX’s Falcon Heavy can transport 64 tons. The first start will have the Blue Ring, a spaceship that serves to communicate with engineers on Earth. Jarrett Jones, mission manager, emphasized the learning process, regardless of the start of the start. Blue Origin hopes from the first mission to attract important data for the development of your future projects, such as Bild.de reported.
challenges and objectives
Blue Origin faces challenges in implementing his space plans. The New Glenn rocket is said to offer a critical demonstration, since the company has already transported tourists to the edge of space, but has not yet sent satellites to the orbit, such as Boston Herald . A successful start could enter Blue Origin into the series of US companies that are able to bring satellites into space, and thus challenge SpaceX's dominance in the starting market.
The new Glenn rocket is also designed for reuse of at least 25 flights per booster, which should enable significant cost reductions when accessing space. Blue Origin has chosen a sophisticated development tactic and attaches great importance to comprehensive tests to minimize risks. It was originally planned to transport with the New Glenn satellite for NASA to Mars, but one was targeting due to preparation problems.
