Thanksgiving festival in Wiesbaden-Bierstadt: Celebrate apples, children and community!
Last weekend, the community of Bierstadt in Wiesbaden experienced a special festival of gratitude when numerous residents and guests came together despite the cloudy weather to celebrate an ecumenical Thanksgiving service. The service took place under the open sky "on the spruce" and was led by the spiritual pastor Philip Messner and pastoral officer Johannes Mockenhaupt. The assembly was not only an expression of community, but also a way to appreciate the abundance and generosity of nature.A central point of the service was the apple, which was a symbol of God's gifts. The rich harvest gabs, paired with an artistically designed altar made of wooden boxes, adorned the altar cross and conveyed a feeling of diversity and abundance. This was supplemented by the sermon, which was kept in an entertaining dialogue by Astrid Scheit and Werner Born. They quoted the Timothy letter: "Everything that God has created is good and nothing is reprehensible what is received with thanks."
a sign of hope and future
The two preachers combined the different types of apple with the idea of hope and future by describing the planting of an apple tree as an active expression of human responsibility and patience. The specimens ranged from beautiful, crunchy apples to somewhat less perfect fruits, which symbolized the beauty of creation in its entire diversity. It was emphasized that the talents of the brewers are also directed by God, which made the audience smile before the speech with a warm “on a beer” ended.
The musical accompaniment of the services was taken over by a wind ensemble under the direction of district cantor Roman Bär, which with the play "What a Wonderful World" perfectly rounded off the grateful atmosphere of the day. The community celebrated not only the harvest, but also the community and the joy of being together.
children's activities and culinary delights
The St. Birgid community center was lively in the morning when numerous children took part in a breadback workshop. The small bakers kneaded, shaped and baked their own bread according to a simple recipe that enabled a wide variety of variations. When the bread was finished in the oven after exactly an hour, the golden brown loaf was proudly distributed in the service and were very well received by the visitors. After the service, the children were actively involved in the production of fresh apple must. They crushed the apples with their own hands and pressed them, which gave the juice a special note. The adults, on the other hand, were able to enjoy a hearty catering by the Fichter Kergefeschaft, served the hot potato and lentil soup as well as freshly baked apple pie. The Highlight of the afternoon was the Karl of St. Birgid coffee mobile, which provided a cozy end with freshly brewed coffee.
This celebration of thanks was not only a religious ceremony, but also an expression of community and creativity that combined several generations. The colors and flavors of the harvest as well as the radiant faces of the children, who proudly presented their homemade bread, made this day an unforgettable experience for everyone involved. The donations that went to the Diakonie tea room the next day were another sign of solidarity within the community, which underlines the importance of gratitude and compassion all the more.
