increasing violence in the Sinaloa cartel

In the past few months, the violence between rival factions of the Sinaloa cartel in northwestern Mexico, especially in Culiacan, has increased. Zazueta explained that this resettlement is the greatest relocation of wild animals in Mexico based on violence.

threats and security concerns

He emphasized that the sanctuary had to close because the staff was exposed to threatening situations, robberies and attempts to blackmail by criminal groups. "Culiacan is the hardest area. We have never had any problems in the past, but today it has become very difficult for us to get to the sanctuary at all. They practically hunted us out of the village because there were people who wanted to blackmail us," Zazueta told Cnn.

To the relocation of the animals that took place on Tuesday, employees of the sanctuary worked together, voluntary and supportive organizations. Zazueta explained that the decision to close was made after an elephant, named Viki, had a problem with her leg. The team quickly found that no veterinarian was ready to take the trip to Culiacan on the basis of security concerns.
