Large sealing project in Wels: Demolition for Neue Volksgarten begins!
Wels, Österreich - The Volksgarten in Wels faces a comprehensive redesign, which is the largest refrigeration project in Austria. From April 28, 2025, the demolition of the old exhibition halls on the site begins to make room for a new park. This project is intended to include over 10 hectares and offer both the population and guests a high recreational value. With the expansion of the existing folk garden to the Traunufer, a high quality of stay is sought, which was also included in the planning by citizen participation. According to the information from OTS , over 40,000 square meters of space will be sealed to improve the quality of life in the region.
The design of the new folk garden takes place in several phases. After demolishing the exhibition halls 1 to 8 from May, the demolition of halls 9 to 13 will follow from June. The preparations for the water playground and the tree plantings will begin from October, while the final planting work will be carried out from February to May 2026. The planning takes place by Yewo Landscapes GmbH from Vienna, and the project has a budget of around 20 million euros. Around 13.7 million euros are calculated for the future State Garden Show 2027.
design elements and leisure activities
The Volksgarten is divided into three zones: a movement space, leisure areas and a trees. The central design elements include water features such as a sea pond, a water playground and a fountain field. In addition, the plantings of around 500 new climate arrivals are planned for trees, shrubs and perennials. In order to reduce urban heat development, bright surface materials are used.
It is also important that tree felling are only carried out if there are stability or health problems. The central areas of the park receive enclosures with gates, while the publicly accessible areas remain open around the clock, which increases accessibility and security. In the context of urban development, civil engagement is crucial. A future workshop recently took place in Pfaffenhofen, in which citizens were able to contribute ideas and visions for urban development. This event, which took place on February 24th in the ballroom of the town hall, was part of the development of a new land use plan. The aim is to renew the 20 -year -old regulations and to create new opportunities for residential development, business and green areas. Citizen participation is considered a challenge and opportunity to promote identity and potential of the city. Results from this event flow into the city council in March, which underlines the role of citizens in decision-making processes, such as "https://www.pafunddu.de/pfaffenhofen/c-buergerervice-stadt-undpolitik/mittswerkstatt-buergergetigung-zur-stadtent-zur-stadt-zur-stadt-zur-stadt-zur-stadtenhofen Citizens Service is executed.
