VfL Wolfsburg is subject to Rome: Pech in the first Champions League game!
The football players of VfL Wolfsburg have made an unfortunate start to the Champions League season. In the opening game against the Italian champions As Rome, the Wolfsburg women lost 0-1. This defeat was particularly bitter because the team under coach Tommy Stroot was ultimately dissatisfied after a number of promising actions.
In the first round, it seemed as if the Wolfsburg women were dominating the game, but the statistics did not lead to the results. They had about 70 percent possession of the ball, but found no clear chances. In contrast, the Romans managed to take the lead with their first serious attack. A handball by Lynn Wilms acted a penalty decision, which Manuela Giugliano will be transformed safely in the 14th minute. This early tour gave the hosts confidence, while the wolfes were still looking for the compensation.
Wolfsburg remains without a goal success
The Wolfsburg team was willing to equalize the leadership of the Romans. Trainer Stroot played tactically and brought key players like Alexandra Popp to the storm center. But despite several attempts, luck was not on the side of the Lower Saxony. The shots ended up on the crossbar twice, and goalkeeper Merle Frohms was also able to ensure that the Roma did not pull away from it.
The Wolfsburg women were unable to create serious danger in the ball despite their superiority in possession of the ball. Marina Hegering's header in the 53rd minute and a deflected shot from Vivien Endemann in the 68th minute, both of whom landed on the crossbar. Several shots on the goal were skilfully parried by the strong performance of the AS goalkeeper Camelia Ceasar.
The pressure of the wolf remains unsuccessful
In the further course of the game, the wolves tried to equalize. Svenja Huth and Endemann increased the pressure on the Italian defense and showed themselves committed and combative. But the ball just didn't want to go online. Occasional counterattacks of the Romans ensured additional tension, with Frohms repeatedly decisive intervention to keep the game in balance.
The game finally ended with a 1-0 tremor for AS Rome, while Wolfsburg had to travel home empty-handed. In the group, the French champion Olympique Lyon won the parallel game against Galatasaray Istanbul 3-0, which should result in further thinking about their own appearance for the Wolfsburg women. This asks the question of how the clouds will assert themselves against the superiority from Lyon if they appear in the Great Wolfsburg arena on October 17th.
The upcoming Bundesliga game will be another important game for VfL Wolfsburg against FC Bayern Munich on Saturday, in which a return to psychological stability and concentration is required. The wolves have to show this weekend that they have learned from their mistakes so as not to put themselves under pressure.
