New car market under pressure: approvals fall, electric cars fall!
In December 2024, the Federal Motor Transport Authority (KBA) registered a total of 224,721 new cars, which corresponds to a decline of 7.1 % compared to the previous year. The 2024 annual balance sheet shows that a total of 2,817,331 new cars were recorded this year, which corresponds to a slight minus of 1.0 % compared to the previous year. The new registrations of hybrid models rose by 12.7 % to 947,398 units, which is 33.6 % of the market. The plug-in hybrids also had an increase of 9.2 % to 191,905 approvals, which corresponds to a market share of 6.8 %. In comparison, only 13,711 liquid gas -powered cars were approved, which corresponds to a market share of 0.5 %. With 137 new registrations, natural gas vehicles have a dramatic decline of 89.7 %. The average CO₂ emissions were 119.8 g/km according to WLTP, which is an increase of 4.2 %. Market information shows that the 2024 SUV segment had a share of 30.2 %, while the compact class was followed by 18.7 %.
The new registration record for 2024 shows a mixed picture regarding the car brands. Porsche recorded an increase of 9.9 %, while VW still remained the highest brand with a 19.1 % market share. Brands such as Tesla and Polestar showed significant declines with -41.0 % or -49.4 %. In the area of used cars, a total of 500,236 vehicles changed hands in December 2024, which corresponds to an increase of 4.0 %. In total, 7,525,836 vehicles changed owners in 2024, which means an increase of 7.1 %.
