EU is planning cat chip: progress or bureaucracy madness?

In a groundbreaking decision, the EU countries agreed on new legal provisions on the well-being of pets, especially cats and dogs, on June 26. These regulations are intended to standardize animal welfare requirements within the European Union and represent a significant step in animal welfare policy, as several sources report. Among other things, the planned measures include the obligation to chip all cats and dogs and register in a national database before they are sold or given away. This could not only reduce the suffering of straying, but also strengthen the responsibility of the animal owners, emphasize experts from the animal welfare scene.

The Flemish Minister of Education, Sport and Animal Welfare, Ben Weyts, praised the initiative and described it as a good basis for the further development of animal welfare policy at European level. However, the NGO four paws criticized that the proposal only applies to animals that change owners and demanded that all cats and dogs should be chopped to combat illegal animal trade. Experts point out that such a chip requirement not only improves animal welfare, but also contaminated the uncontrolled propagation of cats.
