Zverev fails in Monte Carlo: setback for the tennis star!

Alexander Zverev had to accept a disappointing defeat at the Masters 1000 tournament in Monte Carlo. The German tennis player, who started the tournament as top set, lost 6: 2, 3: 6, 5: 7 in the second match against the Italian Matteo Berrettini. Zverev had a free time in the first round and thus went into the encounter with high expectations, but lost in an exciting duel that reveals his recent problems on the pitch.

This defeat marks another setback for Zverev, which has not reached a tournament beyond the quarter -finals since the lost final of the Australian Open 2025. Despite his success on hard court in the past, among others at the US Open 2020 and Melbourne 2025, the two-time Grand Slam finalist is currently fighting with its form.

a game that turned

The start against Berrettini seemed promising, Zverev initially conducted and performed well. But the Italian, who had traveled to Monte Carlo shortly before his 29th birthday and had previously reached the Miami Open quarter -finals, found his game back. Berrettini won in the first round against Mariano Navone, but seemed a bit overwhelmed in the initial phases of the second game.

In the further course of the game, however, Zverev lost his serve twice, which gave Berrettini the opportunity to come back to the game. The latter stabilized his surcharge and achieved the only break in the second set to bring the game into the decisive third set. In a dramatic final set, both players exchanged impact games. In the decisive eighth game, Berrettini took the lead with a 0-40 lead and finally turned his advantage to win the match.

Zverev's ranking printing

The current development puts Zverev under pressure, especially since it has to defend a significant part of its ranking points in the coming months. Historically, the player who has shown his best performances on sand fields has to fight to get back on track. Before his unexpected defeat in Monte Carlo, Zverev was already able to record significant success at the Internazionali BNL d’Italia and the French Open.

Overall, Zverev's performance at this Masters tournament is considered critical because he has to secure his position in the world rankings. The starting point is challenging, especially since its current elo rating depends heavily on its competitive mirror. In order to achieve a good position in the upcoming events, decisive progress is required.

The events in Monte Carlo also raise questions about how Zverev can adjust his performance to find your way back to old strength. The pressure and expectations are high, but Zverev has proven in the past that it is able to fight out of difficult situations.

This remains to be seen how Zverev will be in his future appearances and whether he is able to end his traumatic run and fight back on the promotion race.
