Seehausen, Deutschland - An exciting idea hovers over the disused railway line between Wittenberge and Salzwedel! Tobias Schulz from Groß Garz, a passionate cyclist and member of the association council of Seehausen, plans to create an attractive bike path on this former route. He will present this vision in the committee for business development and tourism next Monday. Schulz is convinced that the region could benefit from such a project and sees a tested concept that has already been successfully implemented in other federal states in the conversion of railway lines into cycle paths.

The Altmarker has already obtained information about funding opportunities that cover up to 90 percent of the costs in West German federal states. "What worked there could also succeed in the local region," says Schulz, and is optimistic that the railway line between Wittenberge and Salzwedel will not be put back into operation. He plans to speak to an association that is committed to reviving the rail network to find out whether they are also interested in the conversion into a bike path.

a new wind for cyclists

Schulz sees a new bike offer for the rural region. He refers to the positive development in the unit community in Bismark, where the mayor Annegret Schwarz has successfully used a former railway line for cyclists. The symbolic groundbreaking for the bike path between Bismark and Kalbe took place in February, and the completion is planned for the summer of 2025. "Let's be honest, except for the Elberadweg it looks mau here," said Schulz, who keeps hearing in talks with tourists that the network of cycle paths in the region should be expanded.
