Mobile phone ban in schools: a necessary step or exaggerated fear?
A nationwide mobile phone ban for schools in Austria will be effective on the date of 1 May. This affects folk, middle, special schools and AHS sub-stages. The schools have the opportunity to allow exceptions, for example when cell phones are to be used in class. LAbg. Dagmar Häusler from the MFG describes the ban as "unfortunately unavoidable" and warns of the negative consequences of excessive cell phone use on the development and concentration of students. A nationwide survey of 950 teachers shows that 74 percent are for such a ban, which underlines the widespread concern of the effects of smartphones on school performance. According to Häusler, however, the parents have to perceive their responsibility because they have the most influence on the usage behavior of their children.
increasing problems through cell phone use
In order to avoid IT problems, alternatives are sought: Some teachers consider that parents do not give their children to school. But the dilemma remains: parents want to keep their children accessible for emergency, while the educators try to make the lessons trouble -free. "The ideal solution would be to let the cell phones stay in the locker. But that doesn't work because we have no control," said a teacher. This illustrates the complex need for action associated with the planned regulation.
