New shine for the St. Johannerhof: Tradition returns!
A historical chapter is re -opened: The popular tavern "St. Johannerhof" in Ternitz, which has a long tradition, is expected to reopen after elaborate renovation work at the end of April, early 2025. Christoph Gruber, the restaurateur behind this project, was thrilled when he opened the door to the construction site and found: "Just come in, but there is currently still an absolute construction site". The reopening under the original name is of great importance for the Gruber couple, because it combines its project with the venerable history of the place, such as noen.at reported.
parallel to the renovation work in the "St. Johannerhof" there are also numerous initiatives to deal with the history of the former concentration camp complex Gusen. A collection of documents that deals with Johann Gruber's life was launched to capture the fate of this priest and teacher as well as the tragic events in the warehouse for future generations. The digital preparation of this collection is possible thanks to the “Platform Johann Gruber” and the Diocese of Linz. The archive comprises around 6300 documents that are to be made accessible to science and educational work, such as dioezese-linz.at
protection of memory
While the Restaurant is supposed to attract guests again soon, the collection on Johann Gruber serves the important purpose of keeping the memory of the victims of National Socialism alive. All materials are structured in chapter that contain historical contextualizations and personal stories. This initiative should also appeal to younger people and stimulate to deal with the past and to understand the importance of memorial work.
