Waltz sounds conquer the all: Johann Strauss' masterpiece in space!
Waltz sounds conquer the all: Johann Strauss' masterpiece in space!
On the occasion of Johann Strauss II's 200th birthday, his famous Danube Walzer is sent on a musical journey into space. This extraordinary action, called "Waltz in Space", was launched by Wientourism and the European Space Organization (ESA) to correct a historical mistake from 1977. At that time, the Danube Walzer was not sent to space with the Voyager Golden Record, while many other important pieces of music that represent humanity came there. Now the waltz is to be sent to infinite space as part of an interlocked concert. As leadersnet.at reports on May 31, 2025 in the Museum of Applied Art (MAK), a special concert of the Vienna symphonics is sent from Strauss in real time to the Voyager 1 room probe.
Under the direction of chief conductor Petr Popelka, in addition to the waltz, other galactically inspired pieces are listed. Through the ESA Deep Space Antenna in Cebreros, Spain, the music is transferred to space as an electromagnetic wave at space. About 23 hours after the transmission, the signal will reach Voyager 1, which has moved in interstellar space since 1977. The interstellare event is broadcast not only in the MAK, but also in the Viennese beach bar Hermann and in the New York Bryant Park via Livestream, such as meinbezirk.at reports .
symbolic connection to music
In this unique project, people worldwide can actively participate by sponsoring one of the 13,743 grades of the Danube Waltz. Each participant receives a personalized certificate and becomes a "spacenotes ambassador", which further increases the connection to the mission. Mayor Michael Ludwig is already the sponsor of a grade and thus supports this historical initiative. In addition, a short film is produced to celebrate the Strauss anniversary, which is humorously addressed the special connection between music and space and distributed on platforms such as YouTube and Disney+.
