Europe and the USA put Russia under pressure because of Ukraine, Trump turned this
Trump's message to Russia
Trump's special envoy for Ukraine, Keith Kellogg, even joined the Choir of the US allies and asked Russia to comply with the ceasefire call. But then the Russian President Vladimir Putin spoke and refused to even mention the demand. Instead, he presented something old as something new: direct conversations between Russia and Ukraine in Istanbul, just four days later. The transatlantic unit broke up. Trump started on the proposal of the Kremlin and explained in his social network Truth Social that Putin did not want to ceasefire - instead, he put pressure on the Ukrainian President Wolodymyr Selenskyj immediately.
The reactions in Kyiv and Washington
The pendulum movement continued. Trump had behaved silently, while the long -time allies of the United States announced their newly won unit. After Putin spoke, Trump found orientation again. Selenskyj was unable to show more than personal commitment and courage and offered to personally hold the meeting with Putin, who is charged with war crimes against his country. That is a difficult decision for him domestically.
The military situation and international dimensions
It is important not to rule out the possibility that Moscow and Washington are hatching in the background that could bring the world closer to peace. But while Trump spoke, the European leaders seemed to fall silent. The Ukrainian sky, on the other hand, did not stay still. On the night when a ceasefire was required, Russia started 108 drone attacks, including one who buried a 10-year-old girl among the rubble in the Cherson region.
The explanations of European leaders
The importance of the explanation from Kiev was less in the immediate prospect of an end to the fights for a month. The European leaders seemed greatly skeptical that their push of Moscow would experience approval. Cynics could argue that the exercise was primarily used to prove the white house that Putin had no interest in peace or the specific ceasefire offering that the Trump administration was aiming for.
strengthen the position of Russia
But that was not the only "revelation" that took home the four largest military power in Europe during their complex and long trip to the Ukrainian capital. Trump also improved their perspective on his actual position. Putin was encouraged three times: he was able to fully ignore the European and Ukrainian demands - not even go into it directly. Second, he had not yet felt any of the "massive sanctions" against Russia or the increased military aid for Ukraine that seemed to indicate Europe if there was no ceasefire. Third, his proposal for direct conversations in Istanbul - nothing new, except the date - suddenly became the basis of Trump's position.
a dangerous meeting in Istanbul
The upcoming meeting in Istanbul, if it should take place, is an extremely risky step. Putin and Selenskyj obviously loathe. The latter sees the former as a pro-European traitor and as a symbol of the success that emerged from the imperial decline, have not yet accepted the bureaucrats from Soviet pages. The first sees the last one as the one who brutally attacked his country and bombs incessantly, every night. It is more likely that the two men will not find a common denominator to find a way forward.
the uncertainty for the European and Ukrainian future
A simple conclusion from the past few days is that Trump does not recognize that Putin wants to win time. The Russian troops seem to strengthen themselves, not to weaken, on a front line where they hit hard near Pokrowsk. The weekend periods have passed, which reveals the short phase of the unit as a deviation and shows the White House as unwilling to annoy Putin.
The possible meeting in Istanbul is only three days ahead. But it will probably not bring peace immediately nor even a ceasefire - only diplomatic show run and considerable personal hostility between two men from fundamentally different generations in the post -Soviet world. It could even throw the peace process back and delay the time again when Trump has to decide whether to join his European allies and to cause pain to refuse a ceasefire.
The answer to Trump's shifted, decisive decision is already clear. How Europe and Ukraine help themselves remains uncertain.
