FPÖ calls for clarification: Scandal for U2/U5 construction projects in Vienna!

Laimgrubengasse 10, 1060 Wien, Österreich - Vienna is again in the crossfire of criticism! The FPÖ-Vienna calls for complete information about considerable cost increases and grievances in the controversial U2/U5 project. At a press conference, the Viennese FPÖ boss Dominik Nepp and club chairman Maximilian Krauss made it clear that citizens have the right to transparency. "The initial budget requirements of two billion euros have now risen to an incredible 2.3 billion. And the end of the cost explosion is far from in sight!"

The repeated delays in U2 re-commissioning are a massive source of anger. The original opening in autumn 2023 was postponed to September 2024. These delays are now pushed on "unexpected earth movements" and "communication problems" with a French door supplier, but insiders claim that survey errors and static problems are the actual causes. The situation at the Rathaus station is particularly scandalous, where, despite years of construction, there are still no functioning elevators or escalators.

subway costs rise drastically

In addition to the internal problems of the project, the persistently high construction prices and inflation are cited as further reasons for the exploding costs. According to the latest information published on the Viennese lines website, geopolitical factors, including the Ukraine conflict, cause significant price increases. These developments meant that the original cost estimates, which were based on an annual inflation rate of 2.5% from 2020, are no longer valid. A accumulated cost increase of around 15% is expected, which includes around 300 million euros in additional costs for the U2 expansion.

The FPÖ has already provided a catalog of 31 questions to clarify all relevant topics from surveying errors to the possibly affected insurance benefits. "The Viennese lines may have lied to the population to cover up the real dimensions of the botch," said Nepp. "A fundamental reform in the management of major projects in Vienna is essential!" As Wiener lines reported that discussions to secure financing are already underway, it remains to be seen how those responsible will react to these massive accusations.
