Serbian army: to have service dogs now for only 4 euros!

Kaserne „Fürst Mihailo“, Niš, Serbien - The Serbian army has started a sales campaign for disused military dogs and is looking for new owners for these animals that are no longer suitable for active service after veterinary assessment. According to Kosmo , the dogs are still ideal as pets or wax dogs. It is a regular initiative in which dogs are used for adoption in wax and protection services as well as when searching for mines, explosives or drugs.

The dogs can be visited in the barracks "Prince Mihailo" in Niš. Interested parties will find a list of around twenty dogs available on the website of the Defense Ministry. This list contains information on names, age, breed and price. The prices are particularly low, most dogs only cost around 500 dinar (approx. 4.25 euros), while some dogs are also offered for 400 dinar or up to 3,000 dinar (approx. 25.50 euros). Mainly these are German and Belgian shepherd dogs, Sarplaninac dogs and Labradore.

reactions to the sales campaign

The sales campaign has already led to violent discussions in social networks. Many fear that the low prices could reduce the appreciation of the animals. However, the ministry emphasizes that these symbolic prices were chosen to quickly give the dogs a new home. The dogs are particularly popular with members of the army who have already worked with them and therefore often have a close bond with them. For many of these animals, a private environment could offer a valuable life perspective.

Despite this positive development, there are also serious animal welfare problems in Serbia. According to rainbow rescue , stray dogs and cats are often brutally abused. Fights between dogs are widespread and many old or injured animals are separated or killed. Dogs often live on short chains, without social contact with other animals, and poverty in the region means that animal protection measures are neglected.

animal protection and animal adoption

In public animal shelters, the conditions are often catastrophic, and uncontrolled increase in street dogs remains an unsolved problem. There are no sufficient castration projects, and many dogs die from accidents or diseases that spread due to a lack of vaccinations. In this context, every initiative for adoption, including that of the Serbian army, is of great importance.

In addition to these challenges, there are also encouraging stories of the animal adoption. Such a story tells animal rescue serbia , where two cats were adopted by a family. Despite the grief for a missing cat, a family volunteer helped adopting other cats from the emergency accommodation. The family is now happy about the rescue of the two cats, which are now called Oliver and Lili.

The situations in which animals live in Serbia remain complex, and every adoption campaign, be it from the army or organizations such as Ars, brings hope for improvements for the affected animals.
