The acting of the power: fight for wealth tax in the coalition poker!

After the National Council elections in Austria, which took place in September, the coalition negotiations between the ÖVP, SPÖ and Neos are in a critical condition. Several differences, especially with regard to possible wealth tax, could bring the talks to a standstill. Chancellor Karl Nehammer said on the platform X that the ÖVP will not accept any new taxes, in particular no asset or inheritance taxes, because they would endanger prosperity and jobs. He warned: "Should the SPÖ insist, the negotiations will quickly come to an end," reported 5min.at.

The SPÖ under its boss Andreas Babler insists on the need for a wealth tax for the financial relief of the budget. In a meeting on Friday, according to OE24.at, Babler emphasized that those who had benefited in the past should now make a higher contribution. This is done in the context of a threatening bankruptcy wave and the need to save around 15 billion euros by 2028. Soon there could be a preliminary decision about the coalition structure that was dated December 12th.

The SPÖ sees its main goals in the regeneration of the town center and a better connection through public transport. It also demands relief for heating and housing costs. BABLER made it clear that governors cannot happen at any cost and that the SPÖ is only interested in a coalition based on real cooperation. "If the others forget about the cooperation again, we will not rule. Government is not an end in itself," emphasized Babler. This also includes the question of whether the differences between the parties can actually be bridged or whether there is a final termination.
