Rwanda dreams of the Formula 1 Grand Prix: Return to Africa in sight!
Kigali, Ruanda - Rwanda could soon be the focus of racing, because President Paul Kagame officially announced the country's application to issue a Formula 1 race. With this significant message, Kagame performed during the opening event of the annual FIA gala in the capital Kigali, in which Max Verstappen received the prestigious Formula 1 winner trophy for the fourth time in a row. The last major price on the African continent took place in Kyalami, South Africa in 1993, and the return of racing to Africa is of great interest to Formula 1, such as reported.
"I am pleased to know that Rwanda wants to bring back the thrill of racing," Kagame announced. Formula 1 CEO, Stefano Domenicali, had previously announced that Rwanda could plan a new permanent race track near the new Bugesera airport, which is built about 40 km from Kigali. The design work for the racetrack is directed by Alexander Wurz, a former Formula 1 driver, whereby the route is supposed to run through the hilly landscape and along a lake. This represents significant progress, since everyone involved works with serious intentions to implement it. "We are determined to create something exciting that we can all be proud of," added Kagame, while thanking the FIA for the cooperation, as krone.at reported.
The FIA gala this year is an important moment for FIFA, and President Mohammed Ben Sulayem underlined Rwanda's potential in motorsport. His statements during the meeting showed that Rwanda not only wants to create a platform for racing, but also strives for inspiring cooperation in the areas of innovation, sustainability and traffic safety. The project is regarded as a realistic approach for the return of an African race, but the final contract remains outstanding.
