A rare oil painting by Mahatma Gandhi, which was painted by the British-American artist Clare Leighton in 1931, achieved a price of £ 152,800 at an online auction in London, which corresponds to around 176,626 euros. According to Krone , the picture, the estimated value of which was between £ 50,000 and 70,000, was regarded as the only portrait for which Gandhi himself was a model. This work of art was exhibited in London in November 1931 and once again shown in the Boston Public Library in 1978.
Caspar Leighton, the artist's big nephew, was proud to pose with the painting in front of the auction. He told of his wish to make the work of art accessible to a broader public and even consider to bring it back to India.
