Architecture walk: Discover the historic Boitzenburg Castle!

The Boitzenburg Castle in the Uckermark will be presented in more detail on the last day of 2024 as part of a traditional architecture walk. The tour, which begins at 2 p.m., leads over a distance of 3.5 kilometers and is led by architect Carsten Frerich. The participants can visit monuments in the castle park, which were designed by the famous landscape architect Peter Joseph Lenné. The special places presented during the walk include the Boitzenburg Red Chapel, the snake temple, the lion temple and the apollot temple.

The starting point of the tour is the courtyard of the inn "Zum Grünen Baum". Historical photos offer insights into the earlier state of the place and further information on the surrounding buildings such as the former administrator and the civil servants. Boitzenburg Castle has an eventful history and was first mentioned in a document around 1276. It is one of the largest noble locks in the mark and is surrounded by lakes and forests. A baroque three-wing system was added in the 18th century, and the last conversion in the neo-Renaissance style was added at the end of the 19th century, such as MOZ.de reported.

an eventful history

The eventful history of the castle is shown in numerous conversions over 500 years. It was witness to important historical events, such as looting during the Thirty Years' War, and served various purposes after the Second World War, including a auxiliary hospital and police school. From 1956 until the turnaround, the castle was used as a recreation home of the National People's Army. A devastating fire in December 1949 caused considerable damage. The castle has stood since 1991 after it has been transferred to the assets of the trust, so no longer under military use and was acquired in 1998 by a Hamburg investor for a symbolic price. It currently acts as a child and youth hotel and also offers wedding locations and weekly guided tours.

Special features of the castle are the dining room, which was set up around 1912 with impressive woodwork, as well as the ceiling reliefs in the hunting room, which represent examples of North German plastering art from the period of the Thirty Years' War.
