Fatal crash: German hikers fall 100 meters on the Zimbajoch!
Zimbajoch, Vorarlberg, Österreich - On July 18, 2025, a tragic alpine accident occurred at the Zimbajoch in Vorarlberg, in which a 54-year-old German hiker suffered fatal injuries. The accident happened during the descent towards the Heinrich Hueter hut when the hiker fell into a rock channel. The fall reached a height of around 80 to 100 meters, which immediately triggered an extensive rescue operation. Despite the rapid reaction of the rescue workers, only the death of the accident was found, as [Vol.at] (https://www.vol.at/ticer-alpin ancient-am-zabl-deutscher-German-wanderer-stuerzt-ab/9560648) reported.
In the following, the accident -prone hiker and the adjacent hiking group were brought into the valley with a police helicopter. Several organizations were involved in the operation, including the ÖAMTC rescue helicopter C8, the Libelle Vorarlberg flight police, the alpine police and the mountain rescue from Vandans. A crisis intervention team (KIT) Vorarlberg was also available for those affected.Investigations and other accidents
The police have started an investigation into the exact course of the accident in order to clarify the circumstances of this tragic incident. This type of alpine accidents is not unusual in the region, as is another fatal incident in the Kleinwalsertal in early July, in which a climber crashed during a tour. In this accident, the rescue workers were only able to determine the death of the mountaineer, since the exact circumstances are still unclear, so vorarlberg.orf.at.
In the past few weeks there have been several serious accidents in the mountains. On July 5, 2025, a 24-year-old climber fell on the Watzes tip, and there was also another incident in the Dolomites in which a German hiker was hit by lightning. This illustrates the risks that mountain trips bring, even in good weather conditions and experience. Many alpinists also underestimate the dangers or are insufficiently equipped, which can lead to tragic accidents, as documented on alpin.de
The series of tragic events underlines the need for comprehensive preparation and caution on mountain tours.
