Tyrolean state parliament decides on the novella of tourism financing: raising the tourist tax planned

The Tyrolean state parliament recently made a groundbreaking decision by approving the amendment to tourism financing and levy. The vote showed that the economy will be relieved of around twelve million euros from January 1, 2025, while the tourist tax is increased at the same time. This measure was supported by the coalition parties ÖVP and SPÖ and the Fritz list, while FPÖ, Greens and NEOS agreed.

The tourism tax in Tyrol has existed since 1927 and is raised by companies that draw economic advantages from tourism. The reform stipulates that the lower five of a total of seven contribution groups are relieved by an average of 24 percent. At the same time, the minimum rate of residence tax per guest and night is raised from 1 euro to 2.6 euros.

The MPs debated the importance of tourism financing for Tyrol and emphasized the need to maintain the infrastructure for the industry. The reform was rated positively by the SPÖ, while the FPÖ and the list of Fritz expressed criticism. The Greens warned an ecologization of tourism in view of the environmental problems and called for more transparent use of the contributions.

The decision of the state parliament provides controversial discussions and shows the different opinions on the need and design of the tourism levy in Tyrol. Further developments remain to be seen to see how the reform will affect the tourism industry in the long term. Further information on this topic can be found on oe24.at .
