Share for the forest: science and economy in the fight against climate change

on March 21, 2025, on the occasion of the international day of the forest, the International Union of Forest Research Organizations (Iufro) and Mondi, a leading paper and packaging company, announced the extension of the "Teaming Up 4 Forest" platform. This unique science business platform was launched in 2021 and has now built a network of over a hundred experts from science, industry and politics. Dirk Längin, head of fiber procurement at Mondi, emphasized the importance of the cooperation between science and business in order to make the supply of wood and other ecosystem services future -proof. Alexander Buck, Managing Director of Iufro, also expressed the intention of further expanding the activities and the targeted research work within the project in order to tackle current challenges such as climate change, as on ots.at

The platform aims to act in times of climate change and to ensure long -term safety of wood fiber procurement. Buck and Pängin clarify that the partnership contributes to tackling the challenges in the use and protection of forests, whereby the focus is on the sustainable use of forests in a circular economy. In cooperation, significant progress has already been made, especially in the dialogue between scientists and company representatives, to better understand the diverse expectations of the forests. A concrete example is the development of vulnerable alternatives to the spruce, one of the main sources for fibers in industry that is endangered by climatic changes. This information can also be found on Teamingup4forests.com where the success of the platform and further steps to strengthen the cooperation between science and economy are highlighted.
