Concern for FPÖ election success: Jewish community in Austria worried

The Jewish people in Austria is concerned about the election victory of the right FPÖ, as President of the Israelite religious society, Oskar German, emphasizes. He warns of the FPÖ, which is not like other European right -wing parties, but act as a political arm of German -national fraternities that are associated with National Socialism. German reports of troubling incidents where FPÖ politicians took part in funerals in which SS songs were sung.

Despite the success of the right -wing populists, German relativizes the situation. Over 71 percent of voters have supported parties who reject an FPÖ government participation. In the parliamentary elections, the FPÖ positioned itself as a clear winner with around 29 percent, while other parties have excluded any cooperation with the FPÖ or at least with party leader Herbert Kickl.

The statements of Oskar German illustrate the concern of the Jewish community in Austria in view of the growth of right -wing extremists in the political structure of the country. The developments are highlighting the challenges and uncertainties that certain population groups face.
