Scandal in Baku: World climate conference ends with disappointing results!
The World Climate Conference, which raged in Baku for more than two weeks, ended with a thunderbill of disillusionment. The participants did not leave the event with cheers, but with disappointment - important questions remained in the fog of ambiguity. Despite the tough struggle at night for an ambitious plan for international climate finance, a fader remains after taste. The new decision promises an annual contribution of at least $ 300 billion through the industrialized countries by 2035. However, many developing countries, especially Cuba and Bolivia, had hoped for a total of $ 1.3 trillion by 2035 or at least 500 billion. "A farce and an insult," it sounded from the ranks of Nigeria, which reacted with strong protest.
The group of people of the African negotiators was particularly outraged and called the agreement "too little and too late" while the emotions were cooked in the hall. The Nigerian comment from a "joke" received thunderous applause. India also spoke up with a thundering "poor" and "abysmally small". The protests did not stop: voices from politicians and representatives who spoke from failure to fraud were sounded everywhere. And as if it were not enough, the small island states also felt over. Her representatives left the negotiations out of pure protest and shouted against the chaotic conference lines that "do not do justice to the reality of the climate crisis".
violent struggle for a new financing age
The Azerbaijani presidency received no medals for their performance - on the contrary, the criticism echoed through the room like a strong echo. Several voices complained about the chaotic organization and the ignorance of the speeches. Despite everything, the template was celebrated as the beginning of a "new era", said UN climate secretary Simon Stell, while US President Biden praised the agreement as a "important step" and the financing goal as "ambitious".
merciless criticism: on fossil fuels and CO2 emissions
Not only the financial question was in the crossfire: there was also no new decisions to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and to say goodbye to fossil fuels. A discreet reference to it was everything that appeared in a design. But Canadas, Chiles and Switzerland were shouting against this "step back". While the conference ended with a delay in the early Sunday morning, the sharp criticism of the Fridays for future activist Luisa Neubauer remains in the memory: "Now more so", instead of giving up.
