Netherlands plan deportations: Uganda's new role in the asylum dispute!
Shengjin, Albanien - The Dutch government has made a controversial decision: rejected asylum seekers are to be deported to Uganda and housed there in recording recipients. This step is part of a larger plan to tighten the right to asylum and reduce the number of asylum seekers. Foreign Trade Minister Reinette Klever said that it was primarily African migrants that could not return to their home countries. Uganda is to be financially compensated for the admission of these people.
The plan has caused mixed reactions in the Netherlands. While the government coalition is behind the project, the opposition only sees it symbols. The left -liberal MP Rob Jetten criticized the measure and pointed out that similar initiatives in Denmark and Great Britain failed. Nobody was ready to return to Africa, said Jetten.
New developments in Italy and Albania
in parallel to the Dutch plans, Italy has implemented an Agreement with Albania to outsource asylum procedures into a safe third country. A new recording center was opened in the port city of Shengjin, north of Tirana. Italian and Albanian authorities work together here to identify and register asylum seekers. The first 16 migrants have already been brought to the center by an Italian naval ship.
Problems and success of the asylum centers
However, Italy had to accept a setback when it had to bring four asylum seekers back from Albania. A first exam showed that two of them were not able to process their asylum application there. These cases show the complexity and challenges in the implementation of international asylum procedures.
Albania, on the other hand, is not ready to take on similar procedures for Germany. Prime Minister Edi Rama emphasized that Germany should look for other partners. Albania does not want to carry out German asylum procedures, even if the country is already cooperating with Italy to stop irregular migration. Rama sees a model for creating legal migration channels in the collaboration with Italy and wants to comprehensively test international model projects first.
