Health Sciences is a broad term that encompasses all disciplines related to health. The Ludwig Boltzmann Society (LBG) interprets it as including medical research, health system research, and everything in between. In a comprehensive international call for proposals, the LBG has selected three new Ludwig Boltzmann Institutes (LBIs) that will advance excellent health research for the benefit of people’s well-being.
The three new research institutes will provide scientists with the necessary freedom to conduct outstanding research in the following areas:
- Science Communication and Pandemic Preparedness
- Nanovesicular Precision Medicine
- Network Medicine
These institutes will be presented during a press conference held by the LBG, together with Minister Martin Polaschek, on Monday, February 26, 2024, at 10:00 am. The event will feature the following speakers:
- Ao. Univ.-Prof. Dr. Martin Polaschek, Federal Minister for Education, Science, and Research
- Univ.-Prof. Dr.med.univ. Freyja-Maria Smolle-Jüttner, President of the Ludwig Boltzmann Society (LBG)
- Prof. Florian Krammer, PhD, Head of LBI for Science Communication and Pandemic Preparedness
- Univ. Prof. Nicole Meisner-Kober, PhD, Head of LBI for Nanovesicular Precision Medicine
- Univ.-Prof. Dr. Jörg Menche, Head of LBI for Network Medicine
To attend the press conference, please RSVP by Friday, February 23, 2024, to anna@purtscher.pr or +43 664 398 08 55.

This announcement by the LBG highlights the commitment to advancing research in the field of Health Sciences. By establishing these three new Ludwig Boltzmann Institutes, scientists will have the necessary resources and support to make significant contributions to the understanding and improvement of human health.
Moreover, the selection of these particular research areas reflects the current priorities and challenges in the health field. Science Communication and Pandemic Preparedness have become increasingly important in light of recent global health crises, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. By dedicating an institute to this area, the LBG acknowledges the vital role of effective science communication and the need for proactive measures to prevent and respond to pandemics.
Nanovesicular Precision Medicine focuses on developing innovative medical approaches that leverage nanotechnology to deliver targeted and personalized treatments. This field has the potential to revolutionize medical interventions by enhancing drug delivery systems, diagnostics, and therapies.
Lastly, Network Medicine addresses the complexity of human diseases by studying the interconnectedness of various biological systems. By understanding how diseases interact at a network level, researchers can develop new approaches for diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
These three institutes represent the LBG’s commitment to interdisciplinary collaboration and innovation in health research. By fostering a supportive environment for scientists, Austria can position itself as a leader in advancing health sciences and ultimately improving the well-being of its population.
