FPÖ becomes the strongest party in the Styrian state parliament and provides Federal Council President from 2025
In the recent state election in Styria, there were not only changes in the composition of the state parliament, but also in the Federal Council. According to the provisional election result, the FPÖ has gained two mandates and will therefore be the strongest party in the Styrian state parliament in the second half of 2025. The FPÖ will also provide the Federal Council President. The Greens, on the other hand, have lost their mandate in Styria, which also has an impact on their parliamentary group status in the Federal Council. With only four Federal Council: Inside, they rely on the approval of the Federal Council in order to be able to form a parliamentary group. The ÖVP has also lost a mandate.
The future distribution of mandate in the Federal Council looks like this: ÖVP 24 (previously 25), SPÖ 18 (18), FPÖ 13 (11), Greens 4 (5) and Neos 1 (1).
These changes in the composition of the Federal Council have a significant impact on the political landscape of Austria. The FPÖ will have more influence and design options as the strongest party in the Styrian state parliament and the Federal Council. The Greens, on the other hand, have to enforce their political goals in the Federal Council with fewer mandates. It remains to be seen how these changes will affect political work and decision -making in the Federal Council.
